It's Vegas Baby: performers from Cirque du Soleil's "KĂ€"--Billboard Music Awards 2013, MGM Grand Garden Arena Las Vegas

Last night was the 2013 Billboard Music Awards which were held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The BMAs are honors given out by Billboard, the preeminent publication covering the music business. The first Billboard Awards show occurred in 1989. The show didn't happen from 2007-2010 (it couldn't find a network to broadcast it after the contract with FOX expired plus it also couldn't find sponsors to pay for it all) but then returned in 2011 to its current "TV home" on ABC. Now, let's get to the FASHION....

The Best Dressed:

First and Foremost, let's discuss La MADONNA...

Three Words: You Go Girl. The one-and-only Madonna once again made all those other wannabe pop singers seem like they should be cleaning her bathroom! Yes, she left her pants--or skirt--at home but so what! Who cares! She looks AMAZING! Take a look at those legs! Madonna still has it and is not afraid to flaunt it. At last night's Billboard Music Awards, where she got three trophies, including for Top Touring Artist, she thanked all the people in her touring village-including Costume Designer Arianne Phillips, wearing a black bodysuit and garters UNDER a fishnet bodystocking and fur-collared bomber cropped jacket.

Madonna was still, obviously, in a PUNK state of mind, with this look since it was similar to what she gave at the Met Gala.

Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad Couture Spring 2013: JLo looked stunning in a halter-style nude tulle gown with gold leaf applique and hand-applied gold sequins from Zuhair Murad Couture Spring 2013. The neckline was very plunging and as we know (think that infamous Versace dress from the 2000 Grammy Awards!), she loves herself some plunging. Her clean center-parted hair looked perfect and as always, her makeup was flawless.

Emmy Rossum in Zuhair Murad RTW Fall 2013: Actress and singer Emmy Rossum stepped on the Billboard Music Awards BLUE carpet in a black gown from Zuhair Murad RTW Fall 2013. Zuhair Murad's PR department must have been working overtime pre-BMAs because he was by far the most popular designer on the "red" carpet last night (Taylor Swift also wore his design). The gown featured a keyhole neckline, long raglan sleeves and sheer insets vs. solid insets. She looked elegant but "sassy" at the same time. Well done.

Celine Dion in Atelier Versace Spring 2013: Celine Dion wore a gold lame fitted dress with silver metallic insets from Atelier Versace Spring 2013. Even though she did not wear a full-length dramatic gown, she still had great impact in this. I thought she looked classic, still rock & roll, and very much "a lady". One of the Best for sure.

Nicki Minaj: Nicki arrived at last night's BMAs looking quite stylish and Red Carpet Gorg, in this flowy red gown with a gathered bust, torso and front detail as well as sequined trim detail. She was very much on trend with the bold red color and the Grecian Goddess draping. I only wish the dress actually hit the floor, it's about 5" too short. But other than that: Muy Bien Mija!

Miley Cyrus in Balmain Spring 2013: I thought Miley looked great in this white with geo printed jumpsuit from Balmain Spring 2013 designed by Olivier Rousteing. Does she look a little "Cirque du Soleil"? Yes, but I like that she wore a jumpsuit and stood out from everyone else (and I think for good reasons), and she's also very much on trend with the Geometric black and white printed insets.I just wish she wouldn't stand like she was bowlegged. I think I may need to give her a lesson on standing like a Star!

Selena Gomez in Atelier Versace Spring 2013: 20 year-old Selena Gomez went Glam with this ivory crepe gown from Atelier Versace Spring 2013 Collection. The gown features a very high side slit, sheer front asymmetrical inset, DayGlo colored tubing and metal zipper detail. I think she looks sweet but still Va-Va-Boom sexy, as sexy a 20 year-old can be. I also love that the "Versace Team" altered the dress to just the perfect hem length.

Shania Twain in Pavoni by Mikael D Spring 2013: Another celeb featuring the Grecian Goddess trend was Shania Twain. She wore a silver strapless silk gown featuring lots of ruched draping detail and a dramatic train. I thought this was an elegant choice; she looked like she was attending the Academy Awards as opposed to the Billboard Music Awards but it seems to be a trend--even for music awards red carpets, to wear dramatic very elegant full evening gowns. I also liked her new red-ish hair.

Jennifer Morrison in Kristian Aadnevik Fall 2013: ABC's "Once Upon A Lifetime" actress Jennifer Morrison attended the BMAs (in case you're even wondering why she's there, remember the awards was broadcast on ABC) in a very lingerie-inspired (Hello Madonna!) dress from Kristian Aadnevik Fall 2013. Aadnevik was born in Norway but shows in London Fashion Week (and is based in London). The black and sheer gown (if you could call it that) featured a bustier/bodysuit with a applique detail and a chiffon "overskirt". It reminded me a lot of the dresses we saw from Gucci Fall 2011 two years ago:

 Gucci Fall 2011

Kelly Rowland in Rami Al Ali Couture Spring 2013: Kelly wore a silver metallic sequined gown with a split-front silhouette from Rami Al Ali Couture Spring 2013. Syria-born Al Ali is based in Dubai and popular with the Gulf States fashionistas (who can afford it). The gown--as seen on the runway version (on the right, above) had a more 1920's "Great Gatsby" vibe and loose sides that draped into a cowl back. From the looks of it--on Kelly--all that side/underarm looseness was pulled to achieve a more fitted torso./waist silhouette.

Finally, one that I'm "on the fence" with:
Taylor Swift in Zuhair Murad Pre-Fall RTW 2013: The 23-year-old country star won the Billboard Artist of the Year award, along with the Billboard 200 Album of the Year award, Female Artist of the Year, Top Digital Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, along with every country award. It was a big night for Swift. For the night, she wore a royal blue mini dress from Zuhair Murad Pre-Fall 2013 (I told you his PR Dept. was working overtime!). I'm a little "on the fence" with this dress. The dress just isn't that exciting or original. And frankly, reminds me of something a girl would wear to someone's wedding, in 1996. But, Taylor still looked cute and sweet. I just wished she would have really "brought it"!

***UP NEXT: The "Oh Dear!" of the 2013 Billboard Music Awards Red Carpet--and trust me, there were some "OH Dears!"

I think Madonna walks that fine line between icon and desperate icon. I liked her Met look and her GLAAD award scout uniform better than this outfit, this one crossed over for me.

Shania Twain seemed to be channeling Sophia Loren! And, you can't beat Sophia if you want to emulate someone who exudes timeless elegance.
